DESCRIPTION:Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 September 2023World Museum Liverpool \n\n\n\nOur Aquatic Insects SIG would like to invite you to an in-person event at the World Museum Liverpool in collaboration with the Tanypetera Trust. \n\n\n\nThis two day event will include a mix of talks\, tours of the museum collection\, using microscopes\, and a practical workshop. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nThe key themes of the event will be led by the following speakers: \n\n\n\n\nIan Wallis\, World Museum Liverpool: How to help Britain’s rarest caddis\n\n\n\nRachel Stubbington\, Nottingham Trent University: Life in the drying streams of a wet country: the invertebrate biodiversity of UK temporary streams \n\n\n\nMartin Winter\, Environment Agency: Developing digital tools and resources for identification: EA Bug App\n\n\n\nJohn Murray Bligh\, Environment Agency: The River Invertebrate Classification Tool: past present and applications\n\n\n\n\nDay 1\n\n\n\nRegistration is necessary to take part in the first day\, which also includes access to the workshop on the second day if you wish to attend both. \n\n\n\nThe morning session will be led by key speakers\, covering the key themes of ‘Morphology and Identification’ and ‘Management and Conservation’. There will also be opportunities for open call flash talks. Abstract submission is now open\, please see details below. \n\n\n\nThe afternoon session will be a choice of a tour of the museum collections (the entomology collections are nationally significant\, with around 750\,000 invertebrate specimens including pinned insects)\, using the laboratory microscopes\, and learning specialist skills. There should be time to rotate to cover two of these activities\, please specify when registering which you would like to take part in. \n\n\n\nDay 2\n\n\n\nThe second day will be a hands-on lab workshop focusing on aquatic entomology: Amphipods of Groundwater and Rivers \n\n\n\nRun by Tim Johns of the Environmental Agency\, this workshop will cover some of the different Amphipods found in UK groundwaters and surface water\, plus a few non-native species. There will be an opportunity to identify different amphipods (freshwater ‘shrimps’). We will be using the Freshwater Biological Association key to Crustaceans but no books are a requirement for the workshop. \n\n\n\nIf you only wish to attend the workshop\, this is free\, inline with the aims of the Tanyptera Trust to make entomology accessible to all. It is still necessary to register your details below so we know the numbers attending. \n\n\n\nPlease note\, registering for the workshop only does not permit you to attend the meeting on the first day. \n\n\n\nAbstract Submission\n\n\n\nAbstract submission is now closed. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nRegistration is now open at the bottom of this page.
