SUMMARY:Sustainable Agriculture: From monitoring to management
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 27 September\, 09:30 – 17:00The Fowden Hall\, Rothamsted Conference Centre \n\n\n\nJoin our Sustainable Agriculture Special Interest Group (SIG) for a day delving into the full agricultural entomology life cycle\, from monitoring to management and beyond. Sustainable agriculture is faced with a multitude of challenges in the coming decades\, from increasing pressure to produce for a growing global population\, to climate change and the associated range shift of pests. Since insects are central to our food systems as protectors\, pollinators and pests\, entomological research is optimally placed to monitor and manage these challenges. \n\n\n\nThis meeting will cover all aspects of entomology for sustainable agriculture\, and will specifically focus on biomonitoring\, translation of research into practice and engagement of practitioners and the public. Alongside invited talks from some exceptional leading researchers across these topics\, we will hold an interactive session on current advances in biomonitoring\, how this subfield may evolve into the future and the implications of this for land management and policy. We are also inviting abstracts for both oral and poster presentations from any registered attendees. \n\n\n\nKey themes \n\n\n\n\nBiomonitoring of pests and beneficials\n\n\n\nTranslation of research into practice\n\n\n\nEngagement of practitioners and the public\n\n\n\n\nKeynote speakers\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome the below leading researchers within the field\, each providing a detailed oversight of the key themes of the conference. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames BellRothamsted Research \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah BeynonThe Bug Farm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarissa CollinsFera \n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract submission\n\n\n\nPlease note\, abstract submission is now closed. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nRegistration is now open at the bottom of this page. Find out more below. \n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: 17:00 (BST)\, Friday 15 September \n\n\n\nTours\n\n\n\nWe have a limited number of spaces available for tours at Rothamsted Research. Spaces will be filled on a first come first served basis. Site tours will showcase the insect science at Rothamsted Research\, encompassing the Rothamsted Insect Survey\, the Insectary\, and the on-site suction trap and light traps. \n\n\n\nThe Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS) has been running two trap networks since 1964. Its long-term data are unique providing information on aphids\, larger moths and many other migrating insects to scientists\, growers\, conservation organisations\, individuals and policy makers. As such\, the networks represent the most comprehensive standardised long-term data on insects in the world and have a wide range of fundamental and applied uses. Visitors can see the insect survey lab\, and hear how the team processes samples from the suction trap and light trap network\, then see examples of the traps in situ. \n\n\n\nThe Insectary is a specialised facility that maintains a range of both indigenous and exotic insect species for scientific purposes. Visitors can view the insect rearing and insect behaviour study rooms\, designed to provide controlled temperature\, lighting\, humidity and airflow. The facility holds DEFRA plant health licences for importing\, maintaining and working with many exotic insect species. Most compartments are licensed for the effective containment of quarantined species and insecticide-resistant strains. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nIn-person:RES Student Member £20RES Member £45Non-Member £100\n\n\n\nOnline:RES Student Member £5RES Member £20Non-Member £70\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch: info@royensoc.co.uk

SUMMARY:Rearing SIG 2023 - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled.\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, this event has now been cancelled. The Rearing SIG hopes to run an event on similar themes next year\, so do keep an eye on our communications for future events. \n\n\n\nInsects and other invertebrates are used in many lines of scientific enquiry including genetics\, forensics\, agriculture\, and human health; as well as kept as pets in the home. This necessitates both organisations and individual rearing a wide range of species literally ‘in house’. \n\n\n\nOur Rearing SIG aims to bring together like-minded scientists and hobbyists to create a strong\, professional network in what is important technical role and leisure pursuit.

SUMMARY:Online talk - Ralph Peters
DESCRIPTION:Ralph Peters\, Head of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa projectWednesday 28 June19:00 – 20:15 (BST)\n\n\n\nOrganised by our international representatives in Malta\, we are delighted to welcome Dr Ralph Peters to give an online lecture on ‘Illuminating Central Europe’s unknown insect diversity.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Ralph PetersHead of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa projectIlluminating Central Europe’s unknown insect diversity \n\n\n\nRalph Peters is currently Head of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa project and Head of Hymenoptera section at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB)\, Museum Koenig Bonn. \n\n\n\nHis main interests are the evolutionary history of Hymenoptera and the taxonomy\, biology and evolution of the parasitoid wasps. Ralph tackles these research interests with an interdisciplinary and integrative approach\, using morphology\, behaviour and field biology\, DNA barcoding\, taxonomics\, phylogenomics and comperative genomics. His work often moves into methods or non-Hymenoptera insect groups\, but his heart will always be with those stunning and beautiful little parasitoids! \n\n\n\nFull list of publications: https://scholar.google.de/citations \n\n\n\nGBOL III: Dark Taxa \n\n\n\nFor the overall goal of illuminating biodiversity\, shedding light on ‘Dark Taxa‘ is key. Taxonomy delimits\, describes and characterizes species and is a crucial component in this context. Modern integrative taxonomy needs morphology\, DNA barcodes\, genomes\, life histories\, and new researchers that continue tackling the overall goal with a deep understanding of organisms\, methods\, evolution and species concepts. \n\n\n\nGBOL III: Dark Taxa is a taxonomy and a barcoding initiative\, the first of its kind\, focusing solely on the understudied or unknown part of biodiversity. The project targets the Central-European fauna but its concept of can be transferred to other regions and faunae. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nBecoming a member of the Royal Entomological Society entitles you to discounted (and in this case free) access to our events\, so become a member today! \n\n\n\nRegistration for this talk is now open\, all attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend online.

Her research focuses on the molecular and biochemical bases of plant-pest interactions with a view to developing novel strategies for crop protection. Her group was one of the first to produce insect-resistant transgenic crops. More recently her group has been using functional genomics to better understand the molecular responses of crops to biotic stress (pathogens and insect pests) for the development of molecular markers. In collaboration with Durham University\, her group are actively involved in developing novel biopesticides including those based on RNAi. In addition to their efficacy\, the group is also involved in the biosafety of these strategies\, notably in terms of their potential effects on beneficial insects such as pollinators and natural enemies.  She has published extensively in the field\, including in discovery journals (Nature\, PNAS). She was ranked 3rd in the world ratings for citations on work on GM crops and awarded an Honorary Doctorate for contributions to Biotechnology (Banat’s University of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine). In 2015 she was elected an Honorary Member of the National Italian Academy of Entomology and in 2016 she was awarded the ‘Certificate of Distinction in Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Entomology’\, by the Council of the International Congress of Entomology. She has been in receipt of substantial funding; her research is currently funded by BBSRC\, EU and industry. She has extensive collaborations both within the UK and overseas in addition to having strong industrial links. She is a Visiting Professor at Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (2016-2022) and is Chair of the External Scientific Advisory Board of Agrotecnio (designated a Centre of Excellence for Agrifood Sciences\, Spain). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers need to login to register for free

SUMMARY:Online talk May 2023 - Robert Pyle (Previously Angharad Gatehouse)
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Entomological Society organises insect science conferences and events around the UK and the world for people at all stages of career and interest.\n\n\n\nBecoming a member entitles you to discounted (and sometimes free) access to the majority of events.\n\n\n\n\nBecome a RES Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Royal Entomological Society’s online talk series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese online meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month from 19.30 to 20.45 (UK time). \n\n\n\nThere will also be an opportunity to hear some exciting updates about the Society and its activities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: All attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend the talk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, Angharad Gatehouse’s talk scheduled for Wednesday 3 May has been swapped with next month’s speaker\, Robert Pyle. \n\n\n\nAngharad’s talk is now scheduled to Wednesday 7 June – Should you wish to re-register\, do feel free to do this here so we can keep you updated on the meeting. \n\n\n\nPlease do join us instead on Wednesday 3 May for Robert Pyle’s talk: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Robert Michael Pyle\n\n\n\nLepidopterist \n\n\n\nFounder of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Monks Wood to Hollywood: Fifty Years in Insect Conservation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Robert (Bob) Pyle Hon.FRES is a poet and general author of note\, winner of various literary prizes including a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is an American lepidopterist\, writer\, teacher\, and founder of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Much of his life story is told in the 2020 feature film The Dark Divide\, where Pyle is played by David Cross. \n\n\n\nAmong the books where he brings art and literature to insect natural history are The Art of the Butterfly; Nabokov’s Butterflies; and Chasing Monarchs: A Migration with the Butterflies of Passage (1999)\, the last an unusual combination of original research presented as a popular book\, in which he tracked the southerly migration of western Monarchs over many weeks\, thereby demonstrating for the first time that certain individuals crossed the Rockies\, providing mixing of the eastern and western populations\, which had hitherto been considered separate and more vulnerable. \n\n\n\nDuring three years in 1979-82 at the IUCN/WWF’s international Conservation Monitoring Centre at Cambridge\, UK\, Bob co-compiled (with Sue Wells and Mark Collins) and co-authored the first IUCN Invertebrate Red Data Book\, which laid the blueprint for all subsequent global assessments. He then spent two years establishing butterfly conservation in Papua New Guinea – where it was pretty much unknown – including the sustainable breeding of common species for butterfly farms and the conservation of Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing. In Australia\, Bob Pyle is revered as one of the ‘big three’ pioneers of global butterfly conservation. He has also taught\, lectured and inspired others repeatedly across Europe\, as various nations ‘discovered’ and grew concerned about declining butterfly populations. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers need to login to register for free

SUMMARY:Online talk April 2023 - Arnold van Huis
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: All attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend the talk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Arnold van Huis\n\n\n\nProfessor of Tropical Entomology \n\n\n\nWageningen University\, Netherlands. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEdible Insects: Progress and Prospects\n\n\n\nDuring the last six years the number of articles dealing with edible insects increased exponentially. As feed for animals\, the black soldier fly is often targeted\, mainly because the larvae can transform many different organic side streams of low economic value in high value proteins and fats. \n\n\n\nMicrobial communities in substrates and the insect gut may help in the conversion of low-quality organic side streams. The nutritional values of insect products compare well to those of the common meat products. Health benefits of insects relate to the high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids\, the high iron and zinc content\, the antioxidant capacity\, and the positive effects on the gut microbiota. Chitin strengthens the immune system in humans and in animals\, improves plant growth and activates plant defense. The fat of insects can be technology applied as bio lubricants\, biodiesel\, cosmetics\, and butter replacements in bakery products. Proteins can be employed as a base for bioplastics used for agricultural purposes. The environmental impact of producing insects is lower than that of common production animals. Legislation is gradually becoming more conducive. \n\n\n\nA major challenge for human consumption is to process insects and disguise them in familiar products and make them safe and appetizing. Several strategies are proposed to convince consumers to go from an occasional snack to mainstream food. Professor Arnold Van Huis is Chief Editor of the Journal of Insects as Food and Feed and researches and advocates edible insects both for humans and for livestock. \n\n\n\nIn the 2010 French documentary Global Steak\, he says that locusts can produce 1kg protein from 2kg fodder compared to a cow needing 10kg fodder to produce the same amount of protein. Other benefits are that locusts do not produce greenhouse gases and do not need antibiotics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers need to login to register for free

Having completed a Higher Diploma in Education he gained a Ph. D. in Agricultural Zoology and later studied computer modelling. He has been a member of staff at UCD since 1981. His primary research interests are in the effects of global change on terrestrial biodiversity and nutrient dynamics in soil systems. He has been involved with EU projects in these areas since 1988 and\, in 1997\, he was a Fulbright Scholar\, at the Institute of Ecology\, University of Georgia\, examining the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function. He also has a particular interest in experimental design and statistical models and has published in these areas. He was a member of the Editorial Boards of many journals and was a Subject Editor for Soil Biology and Biochemistry and an Associate Editor of Insect Conservation and Diversity for many years. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish Ecological Association in 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Diana H. Wall\n\n\n\nColorado State UniversityScience Chair\, Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiana Wall works on soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in any ecosystems. She works at the physical limits to life in the Antarctic dry valleys where climate change effects are amplified and species diversity is much reduced compared to other soil ecosystems. Across these ice-free ecosystems\, she and her colleagues showed that soil nematodes—microscopic worms— represent the top of the terrestrial food chain. One species\, Scottnema lindsayae\, had a surprisingly broad distribution and high abundance in drier\, more saline soils\, than other less abundant species found in aquatic systems (e.g\, glacial meltstreams. This knowledge on habitat preference can be used to help predict how species and ecosystems might respond to climate change. \n\n\n\nWall’s more than 25 years of research in the Antarctic continues to clarify the critical links between climate change and soil biodiversity. Her interdisciplinary research with the McMurdo Dry Valley LTER has uncovered dramatic impacts to invertebrate communities in response to climate change\, the key role nematode species play in soil carbon turnover\, and how they survive such extreme environments. A 20-year long-term field project on climate change is revealing that with increased carbon sources\, warming and water events\, the dominant\, physiologically tough Scottnema species that preys on soil bacteria across the dry landscape (also referred to as the “lion of the McMurdo dry valleys”) declined while others increased. By altering the soil physical and chemical habitat through increased moisture\, warming for the future creates a more homogenous soil community with unknown effects on soil carbon turnover rates\, a fundamentally important ecosystem process. Wall has combined her polar research with global scale field studies demonstrating that soil animals increase decomposition rates more in temperate and moist tropical climates than in cold and dry conditions\, indicating a latitudinal gradient in their roles in ecosystems. \n\n\n\nDiana served as President of the Ecological Society of America\, the American Institute of Biological Sciences\, and the Society of Nematologists. Diana received the 2017 Eminent Ecologist Award from the Ecological Society of America\, the 2019 President’s Medal and 2016 Honorary Member award from the British Ecological Society\, the 2015 Ulysses Medal from University College Dublin\, the 2012 SCAR President’s Medal for Excellence in Antarctic Research and the 2013 Soil Science Society of America Presidential Award. Wall Valley\, Antarctica was named in 2004 to recognize her research. She is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America and the Society of Nematologists and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Utrecht University\, The Netherlands. Diana is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is the 2013 Laureate of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Diana is currently Science Chair\, Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative. She is the Inaugural Director of the School of Global Environmental Sustainability at Colorado State University. Diana earned a B.A. in biology and Ph.D. in plant pathology at the University of Kentucky\, Lexington. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABSTRACT SUBMISSION OPENS JUNE 3\, 2022\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGSB3-Announcement — Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy attend?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative\, launched in 2011\, is a major stakeholder in the development of soil biodiversity policy\, and the accelerating scientific knowledge underpinning the vast biological diversity contained in terrestrial soils worldwide.  Among its various activities\, the GSBI launched the Global Soil Biodiversity Conference held in Dijon (France\, 2014) and more recently in Nanjing (China\, 2017). \n\n\n\nThe 3rd Global Soil Biodiversity Conference to be held in Dublin (Ireland) in 2023 will expand on previous GSBI conferences and convene the world’s leading experts in this interdisciplinary field of soil biodiversity science to present and discuss recent advances addressing the urgency of meeting global challenges which link to human\, animal and plant health and a more sustainable world. The conference will be the top meeting for all scientists\, technologists\, experimentalists and modellers\, students and practitioners working on any aspects of soil biodiversity science and its linkages to the functioning of our global biosphere. The conference will provide the latest updates on soil biodiversity research and knowledge for scientists\, policy makers\, regulators\, environmental agencies\, conservationists\, land user managers and other stakeholders in the sustainable use and conservation of soil biodiversity. \n\n\n\nFor further information on the GSBI’s activities\, please see their website at \n\n\n\nwww.globalsoilbiodiversity.org\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull details on booking TBC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you in Dublin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote – We do not provide recordings of events or presentations as standard\, unless otherwise stated.

He is also a University Teaching Officer in the Department of Zoology\, Curator of Insects in the University Museum of Zoology and a Fellow at Clare College\, Cambridge. \n\n\n\nHis work includes investigating biodiversity of oil palm plantations in Sumatra\, Indonesia on the BEFTA programme\, the SAFE Project in Sabah\, Malaysia that experimentally investigates the impact of rainforest fragmentation and collaborating with the Bedfordshire\, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust in the UK\, investigating insect diversity and management on chalk grassland reserves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nManaging tropical ecosystems for insect biodiversity – Edgar Turner\n\n\n\nTropical ecosystems contain an astonishing variety of life\, but are increasingly threatened\, particularly by logging\, agricultural expansion\, and the pervasive impacts of climate change. In this talk I will explore our ongoing work with collaborators in Malaysia and Indonesia investigating some of the impacts of forest logging and conversion to oil palm on insects\, but also ways that landscapes can be managed to maintain and even increase insect biodiversity. \n\n\n\nEd is interested in insect ecology and conservation\, with research projects based in both the UK and Southeast Asia. His research focusses on ways that human-modified landscapes can be managed to benefit biodiversity and healthy-functioning ecosystems\, while still allowing other uses. With collaborators from universities\, NGOs and the oil palm industry\, Ed has studied the impacts of tropical agricultural expansion in Southeast Asia\, particularly on insects\, for about 20 years. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology\, and Curator of Insects in the University Museum of Zoology\, University of Cambridge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind out about the history of the Verrall Lecture.\n\n\n\nKnow young people interested in entomology? And the only reason for making honey is so I can eat it.” Among the more famous A.A.Milne quotes from Winnie the Pooh\n\n\n\n\n\nAs it happens\, May has been working on why bees make honey (with some of the reasons described in her annual review “Honey as a functional food for Apis mellifera“\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor May Roberta Berenbaum is a professor of entomology at the University of Illinois and IGB faculty member. Her research focuses on chemical interactions between herbivorous insects and their host plants\, and the implications of these interactions on the organization of natural communities and the evolution of species. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, she was awarded the National Medal of Science\, the nation’s highest honour for achievement and leadership in advancing the fields of science and technology\, according to an announcement from the White House Press Office. \n\n\n\nShe also created the Insect Fear Film Festival. The festival engages and entertains hundreds of viewers each year with feature-length films and shorts\, commentary on the films\, an insect petting zoo and an insect art contest. \n\n\n\nBerenbaum graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Yale University in 1975. SUMMARY:*CANCELLED* - Evening online talk 2022 - Adam Hart
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Entomological Society organises insect science conferences and events around the UK and the world for people at all stages of career and interest.\n\n\n\nBecoming a member entitles you to discounted (and sometimes free) access to the majority of events.\n\n\n\n\nBecome a RES Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancelled due to unforeseen circumstances\n\n\n\nWe are very sorry to have to cancel this meeting. \n\n\n\nWe have a great programme of evening meetings ahead and hope you will join us for some of them. The next one is on 1st February and will be presented by Professor May Berenbaum (University of Illinois). \n\n\n\nRead more and register for May’s talk here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Royal Entomological Society’s online talk series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese online meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month from 19.30 to 20.45 (UK time). \n\n\n\nThere will also be an opportunity to hear some exciting updates about the Society and its activities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: All attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend the talk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Adam Hart\n\n\n\nProfessor of Science Communication \n\n\n\nRES Vice President \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCitizen Entomology – Power to the People  \n\n\n\nOutreach and engagement in entomology are massively important. But there are so many other pressures on a busy entomologist’s time that it can sometimes feel like there is too much to do to have enough time to tell people about it! We need to find ways to combine activities\, and to do more with less; a citizen science approach to entomology is one way to do that. \n\n\n\nCitizen science involves scientists working in partnership with the public\, and it can be both a powerful research and engagement tool. Professor Adam Hart will outline his experiences with entomological citizen science research\, including projects on ant nuptial flights and social wasp surveys supported by the Royal Entomological Society. By working with the public\, he’ll show how it is possible to produce high-quality research and achieve useful\, high impact\, outreach on both short and long-term projects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdam Hart is an entomologist and the university’s Professor of Science Communication. As well as research and teaching\, he is a regular broadcaster for BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service\, presenting documentaries on topics from trophy hunting to tree diseases. He has also presented the weekly science program Science in Action for the BBC World Service. On television\, Adam has co-presented several documentary series\, most notably BBC4’s Planet Ant and BBC2’s Hive Alive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers need to login to register for free
