SUMMARY:Online talk June 2023 - Angharad Gatehouse (Previously Robert Pyle)
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Entomological Society organises insect science conferences and events around the UK and the world for people at all stages of career and interest.\n\n\n\nBecoming a member entitles you to discounted (and sometimes free) access to the majority of events.\n\n\n\n\nBecome a RES Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Royal Entomological Society’s online talk series\n\n\n\nOur monthly online lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month from 19:30 to 20:45 (BST). Tune in to hear an in depth discussion on a specific field of entomology\, with the opportunity to ask questions. You will also hear about any updates and new activities from the Society. \n\n\n\nThese talks are free for RES members\, so join today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: All attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend the talk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAngharad Gatehouse\n\n\n\nProfessor of Invertebrate Molecular BiologyNewcastle University \n\n\n\n19:30 – 20:45 (BST)\, Wednesday 7 June \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Angharad Gatehouse has the Chair of Invertebrate Molecular Biology at Newcastle University and is Director of Expertise for BioEconomy. Her research focuses on the molecular and biochemical bases of plant-pest interactions with a view to developing novel strategies for crop protection. Her group was one of the first to produce insect-resistant transgenic crops. More recently her group has been using functional genomics to better understand the molecular responses of crops to biotic stress (pathogens and insect pests) for the development of molecular markers. In collaboration with Durham University\, her group are actively involved in developing novel biopesticides including those based on RNAi. In addition to their efficacy\, the group is also involved in the biosafety of these strategies\, notably in terms of their potential effects on beneficial insects such as pollinators and natural enemies.  She has published extensively in the field\, including in discovery journals (Nature\, PNAS). She was ranked 3rd in the world ratings for citations on work on GM crops and awarded an Honorary Doctorate for contributions to Biotechnology (Banat’s University of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine). In 2015 she was elected an Honorary Member of the National Italian Academy of Entomology and in 2016 she was awarded the ‘Certificate of Distinction in Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Entomology’\, by the Council of the International Congress of Entomology. She has been in receipt of substantial funding; her research is currently funded by BBSRC\, EU and industry. She has extensive collaborations both within the UK and overseas in addition to having strong industrial links. She is a Visiting Professor at Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (2016-2022) and is Chair of the External Scientific Advisory Board of Agrotecnio (designated a Centre of Excellence for Agrifood Sciences\, Spain). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers need to login to register for free

To monitor insect species\, and see whether they are increasing or decreasing\, we need detailed biological records to be collated over time. Your records can help ‘measure the health’ of insects in the UK. \n\n\n\nLearn how to Record Insect Species here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy participate?\n\n\n\nInsects are all around us. Learning more about these creatures around us and working out why\, when\, where and how helps us to study\, control and protect them\, and also the ways in which they can help us – but we need all of us – conservationists\, scientists\, schools\, and the whole community – working together to find enthusiasm for the little things that run the world. \n\n\n\nBy participating in Insect Week\, not only can you learn more about your local insects\, plants and wildlife\, you can also make your home\, garden\, local park and environment a better place – for yourself\, other people and other non-human species of animal. \n\n\n\nClick here to see a list of events in your area and if your city isn’t listed\, join in and organise your own! SUMMARY:Online talk - Ralph Peters
DESCRIPTION:Ralph Peters\, Head of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa projectWednesday 28 June19:00 – 20:15 (BST)\n\n\n\nOrganised by our international representatives in Malta\, we are delighted to welcome Dr Ralph Peters to give an online lecture on ‘Illuminating Central Europe’s unknown insect diversity.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Ralph PetersHead of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa projectIlluminating Central Europe’s unknown insect diversity \n\n\n\nRalph Peters is currently Head of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa project and Head of Hymenoptera section at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB)\, Museum Koenig Bonn. \n\n\n\nHis main interests are the evolutionary history of Hymenoptera and the taxonomy\, biology and evolution of the parasitoid wasps. Ralph tackles these research interests with an interdisciplinary and integrative approach\, using morphology\, behaviour and field biology\, DNA barcoding\, taxonomics\, phylogenomics and comperative genomics. His work often moves into methods or non-Hymenoptera insect groups\, but his heart will always be with those stunning and beautiful little parasitoids! \n\n\n\nFull list of publications: https://scholar.google.de/citations \n\n\n\nGBOL III: Dark Taxa \n\n\n\nFor the overall goal of illuminating biodiversity\, shedding light on ‘Dark Taxa‘ is key. Taxonomy delimits\, describes and characterizes species and is a crucial component in this context. Modern integrative taxonomy needs morphology\, DNA barcodes\, genomes\, life histories\, and new researchers that continue tackling the overall goal with a deep understanding of organisms\, methods\, evolution and species concepts. \n\n\n\nGBOL III: Dark Taxa is a taxonomy and a barcoding initiative\, the first of its kind\, focusing solely on the understudied or unknown part of biodiversity. The project targets the Central-European fauna but its concept of can be transferred to other regions and faunae. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nBecoming a member of the Royal Entomological Society entitles you to discounted (and in this case free) access to our events\, so become a member today! \n\n\n\nRegistration for this talk is now open\, all attendees\, including members\, must register below to receive the link to attend online.
