SUMMARY:Insect Hour: Land management for beneficial insects and smallholder livelihoods
DESCRIPTION:Insect Hour: Land management for beneficial insects and smallholder livelihoods\n\n\n\nWelcome to the third event in our online talk series exploring Grand Challenges in Entomology. \n\n\n\nInsect Hour will be held every second Wednesday of the month* from 1pm-2pm (UK time). All are welcome – talks are free to attend and open to both RES members and non-members. \n\n\n\nRegister to attend below\, grab a cuppa or sandwich and join us on Zoom! There will be time for questions and discussion towards the end of the session. \n\n\n\n* Excluding August\, September\, and January \n\n\n\n\nRead more about Insect Hour\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalk summary\n\n\n\nAgro-ecological approaches to enhance beneficial insects are increasingly being adopted in food systems to support both biodiversity conservation and sustainable production. Interventions to enhance insect pollinator communities or natural enemies of crop pests are well studied and form an integral part of many agri-environmental schemes. \n\n\n\nHowever\, these approaches are mainly incentivised in the Global North and are rarely implementable in the same way in smallholder contexts. Using evidence from two GCRF funded projects in South India\, this talk will explore how co-designing context specific solutions with stakeholders may provide the means to ensuring biodiversity conservation as well as farmer livelihoods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nProf. Deepa Senapathi\, University of Reading \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeepa is Professor of Applied Ecology and HoD of the Department of Sustainable Land management at the University. Deepa’s research focusses on the impacts of environmental change on biodiversity and ecosystem services. She has worked in both tropical and temperate systems assessing the effects of climate change and land-use change on endangered bird populations as well as insect pollinator communities.  \n\n\n\nShe also has experience as a Policy Fellow at Defra and a NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellow\, working with multi-actor stakeholder communities to enhance land management for to boost biodiversity and improve ecosystem services. While much of her research has focussed on projects across UK and Europe\, she has\, more recently\, begun working with smallholder farmers in South India towards ecological intensification of crop systems to enhance biodiversity and improve livelihoods.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Farming Special Interest Group (SIG) 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Farming Special Interest Group (SIG)\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 14 July (10:00 – 16:00) \n\n\n\nVenue:  Rothamsted Research\, Harpenden \n\n\n\nTo celebrate the new expanded Sustainable Farming SIG\, this event brings together sustainable agriculture and forestry with pollination and parasitoids\, under the theme ‘co-benefits and trade-offs’. It’s an opportunity to explore the different needs of insects in a productive landscape\, and how to apply entomology towards systems that work for both society and nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter keynote talks from experts in the field\, and posters and flash talks\, we will get hands on with application. The afternoon will focus on practical activities\, with a site tour\, and getting out in the fields looking at invertebrates. There will be lots of opportunity to discuss key themes during activities. \n\n\n\nJoin us for: \n\n\n\n\nTwo expert keynote talks\n\n\n\nFlash-talks and Posters\n\n\n\nA tractor tour of Rothamsted Research including the famous long-term experiments\n\n\n\nA visit to the Rothamsted Insect survey suction and moth traps\n\n\n\nField entomology: sampling insects from farm habitats (weather dependant)\n\n\n\nPlenty of time for networking and discussion\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and call for abstracts is now OPEN below!\n\n\n\nLearn more about our Sustainable Farming Special Interest Group and the Convenors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Speakers\n\n\n\nDr. Jo Staley\, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology\n\n\n\nField boundaries and beyond: do agri-environment schemes support insect pollinators at multiple spatial scales? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJo’s research focusses on large-scale field surveys to investigate biodiversity responses to habitat management\, agricultural practices and climate change. \n\n\n\nJo currently leads the Landscape-scale monitoring of mobile species to agri-environment schemes project\, monitoring the responses of insects\, birds and bats to agri-environment management\, applied at different spatial scales and across multiple agricultural landscapes in England. Her projects also focus on hedgerow ecology\, using field experiments and surveys to test the effects of hedgerow management\, rejuvenation\, structure and age on provision of resources for wildlife and insect assemblages. She has previously worked on biodiversity responses to regenerative farming and sustainable agriculture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Nicola Randall\, Harper Adams University\n\n\n\nWhy we Need Applied Entomology within Sustainable Farming Systems \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicola is the founding director of the Centre for Evidence Based Agriculture\, a reviewing\, training and co-ordinating hub for the collation and synthesis of agri-food evidence at Harper Adams University\, and is also the Director of cross-cutting research for the university. \n\n\n\nNicola’s scientific career started off in entomology\, firstly in ground beetles and then\, for her PhD\, investigating the ecology of sawflies on farmland. She now works more widely in agroecosystems\, and in the use and value of scientific evidence in order to support and underpin policy and management decision making\, but keeps a strong interest in invertebrate ecology\, particularly around the ecosystem services offered by invertebrates in farming systems.  She currently manages an MSc in Agroecology and Sustainable Management in Agriculture\, and has various PhD students working on applied agricultural ecology. \n\n\n\nNicola authored The Biology of Agroecosystems\, was a key author in the recent British Ecological Society ‘Regenerative Agriculture in the UK’\, and is on the editorial board for Environmental Evidence\, a journal for the publication of systematic reviews and evidence syntheses on the effectiveness of environmental management interventions and on the impact of human activities on the environment. She also Chairs an EU COST Action – the Network for Evidence-Synthesis in the Agri-food Sector. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsorship & Exhibition Opportunities\n\n\n\nWe would love to hear from you if you are interested in partnering with us on this event.
