We are currently seeking new Library Committee members. This is a great opportunity to get more involved in understanding, preserving and promoting our spectacular historic collections, as well as helping to maintain the library as an up-to-date entomological resource.

About the Committee

The RES Library Committee reports to the RES Council and is responsible for the strategic direction and decision making for the RES library and archive. Our library and archive have been in existence since the Society’s founding in 1833 and is a globally important entomological collection of books journals and archive materials. The Committee has particular objectives currently to increase the visibility of our collections, including by bringing in funding for various projects including exhibitions and other promotional activities. We are also building our contemporary online collections to ensure our library is accessible to our global membership, and planning to move our physical collections to new, more accessible premeses.

About the role

The Committee meets twice a year via virtual or hybrid meetings, and provides advice to the RES staff via email as required. This is a voluntary role open to any member or Fellow of the Society. The role is for an initial three-year term. The Committee is currently Chaired by RES Trustee Seirian Sumner and supported by the RES Librarian and Archivist, and Director of Publishing. As well as providing an opportunity to learn more about our important collections, the role will give you valuable experience in Learned Society governance.

About you

We are keen to hear from anyone from any demographic group within our membership who is interested in entomological books, journals and archive material. No prior experience or specialist knowledge is required. However, we would be particularly interested to hear from you if you meet any of the below criteria:

  • Are an early career entomologist
  • Have an understanding of how libraries work
  • Have experience of public outreach/exhibitions/events
  • Have experience of securing trust and grant funding

The RES hugely values equity, diversity and inclusivity and the valuable input that our global membership brings. We want the Library Committee to reflect all areas and backgrounds of our community.

To apply please send a short covering letter and a two-page CV to RES Director of Publishing Emilie Aimé.

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact Emilie Aimé, the RES Librarian and Archivist Rose Pearson or the Committee Chair Seirian Sumner.
