Since the first edition of this Handbook was published by F.G.A.M.Smit in 1957, six new species of Siphonaptera have been recorded in Britain, and one new family. An updated checklist of species found in the British Isles is given in this revised Handbook, which includes 62 species in 7 families. Keys to all families, genera and species, together with diagnostic illustrations, are provded to facilitate identification. 577 published distribution references are also listed, detailing the species of flea, and the host and county from which each was recorded.
