About this Group

Hemiptera Biological control Forests Immunology Pest control Symbionts Molecular biology & genomics

Previously known as the Aphid SIG, this group aims to provide a forum for the discussion of studies in Hemiptera biology.

Hemiptera are important pests and natural enemies found in many agricultural systems. A defining feature of hemipterans is the ‘stylet’, which enables these insects to piece tissues and ingest liquids. Both herbivorous and predatory species use enzymes in their saliva, which they inject into a plant or prey, to aid the digestion and ingestion of food. This form of feeding means that many species from this order cause both direct feeding effects but also act as vectors of numerous diseases. Current topics of interest include pest control through IPM, population genetics and population structure using biochemical and molecular markers, dispersal, interactions with host plants and overwintering strategies. The group meets regularly at research facilities and other venues in the UK.

    18 July 2024

This online meeting highlighted current aphid research in the UK and internationally as well as providing an opportunity to generate discussion and engagement. The meeting included a series of short presentations as well as well as quick-fire aphid updates. The meeting was divided into sessions that reflect the diversity of aphid research. Topics included aphid biology, aphid ecology, aphid taxonomy, aphid pest management and more.
