RES awards and grants support insect science and recognition in the sector.

Our grants, awards and bursaries programme support activities which further the Society’s aims and which empower the entomological community to improve and communicate insect science.

Small Project Grants

Supports research projects in entomology that advance the science.

RES Fellows and Members can apply for up to £3,000.

Goodman Fund – Open

Supports projects that advance public understanding and appreciation of insect science in recognition of insect physiologist Lesley J Goodman. 

RES Fellows and Members can apply for up to £3,000..

Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Grants – Open

Supports projects that improve EDI and widen participation in entomology through information campaigns, awareness events and research and definition projects.

RES Fellows and Members can apply for up to £3,000.

Douglas Boyes Fund for Emerging Entomologists

Funds access to entomology equipment for young people aged 14-18, in honour of Douglas Boyes.

Individuals aged 14 to 18 or a group or class of that age group can apply for up to £500.

Student Outreach Fund– Open

Supports the communication and public engagement activities of students.

RES Student Members (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) can apply for up to £500.

A delegate speaking and asking questions with a microphone - audience at Ento24

Conference Participation Grants – Open

Assists participation at a conference to present a talk, a poster or to organise a session/workshop.

RES Fellows, Members and Student Members (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) can apply for up to £500.

Higher Education Bursaries – Open

Provides bursary funds to support postgraduate students in entomology.

Higher Education institutions in UK & ROI offering postgraduate study in entomology can apply for up to £30,000 over three years.

Doctoral Training Partnerships

Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) and Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP)

Considered case by case in collaboration with HE institutions

For outstanding services to the science of entomology in honour of Sir Vincent Wigglesworth.

Researchers and practitioners in the sector may be nominated.

Honorary Fellowship Nominations

Lifetime achievement in insect science or outstanding services to the Royal Entomological Society and wider entomological community.

Researchers and practitioners in the sector may be nominated.

Arnob Chakrovorty with RES Early Career award 2025

Early Career Entomologist Award

For exceptional early career contribution to insect science.

Researchers and practitioners in the sector may be nominated within ten years of completing their undergraduate degree or within ten years pf working in insect science in any capacity, with or without a degree.

J.O. Westwood Medal for excellence in Insect Taxonomy

For the best comprehensive taxonomic work on a group of insects, or, related arthropods.

Researchers and practitioners in the sector may be nominated..

Insect Conservation Award

For an outstanding contribution to insect conservation; on the basis of ‘lifetime achievement’, or ‘considerable and exemplary contribution’ to a significant project.

Researchers and practitioners in the sector may be nominated.

Eleanor Ormerod Award for Application and Practice

For outstanding application and practice of entomology, demonstrating the application of insect science that improves people’s lives in industry, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, medicine and veterinary science.

RES Journal Awards

For the best paper published by an Early Career Researcher in each of the RES journals.

Papers published in a RES journal by an Early Career Researcher may be nominated.

Alfred Russel Wallace Award

For postgraduates who have been awarded a PhD or DPhil, whose work is considered by their supervisor to be outstanding.

Researchers awarded a PhD or DPhil in the last two years may be nominated.

Schools and Young People Teaching Award

Recognises educators working with school-age learners who inspire curiosity, nurture an interest in the natural world, and introduce children and young people to the vital role insects play in nature and our lives.

Nominations open to teachers, home educators, education officers who work with children or young people (aged 5-18), anywhere in the world.

Insect Specimen Curation Workshop – facilitated by Chris Foster at Student Forum 2025

Higher Education Teaching Award

Recognises exceptional teachers and lecturers at universities, colleges, and research institutions worldwide who bring innovation and research insight to preparing the next generation of insect scientists

Nominations open to educators at universities, research institutions, and adult/lifelong learning institutions worldwide.
