What we fund

RES Student Outreach Fund Criteria

Grants to support the communication and public engagement activities of students in entomology and can include activities for Insect Week

Grants to support activities which further ONE or more of the Society’s Strategic Objectives.

RES Strategic Priorities:

  1. Support and advance the study and practice of insect science
  2. Increase public understanding of insect science.
  3. Empower and support the entomological community.
  4. Advance on the Grand Challenges in Entomology by supporting cutting-edge science and innovation

Examples of funded activities could include public engagement events, outreach activities, communication projects, Insect Week activities and community-based initiatives

Who can apply

Applicants must be RES Student Members: Undergraduate or Postgraduate students

Key Dates

There are three application periods scheduled for 2026:

  • First round: 2 March – 31 March 2026
  • Second round: 1 April – 19 June 2026
  • Third round: 20 June – 2 October 2026

Applications should be submitted at least three months prior to the expedition or event.

Assessment Criteria

Strong applications will demonstrate that the project:

  • Clearly meets the criteria of the RES Student Outreach Fund (listed above)
  • Clearly describes how the project relates to insect behaviour and/or physiology and/or other entomological disciplines.
  • Has well-defined aims, impacts and outcomes and detail on how they will be measures, alongside a detailed description of project including context /rationale, aims and methods.
  • Has clear target audience(s) and plans for engaging them.
  • Has strong public engagement and educational value
  • Has considered scope for future continuation.
  • Has taken steps to minimise barriers to participation

Projects must not be primary research studies and must focus on communication, education, or outreach.

Applications must include a detailed breakdown of how funds will be used.

Funding Conditions

  • Maximum award: £500
  • Projects should be submitted at least three months before the event or expedition.
  • Successful applicants may not reapply for this grant within 24 months.

Choice of:

  • Antenna magazine or RES website article (~250 words plus images)
  • Short video for RES youtube channel
  • INSTAR magazine article (for young people)
  • Other similar output
