The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has recently identified insects as a Tier 1 technology in its Top Emerging UK Food Innovations (2025–2035) guidance. This classification highlights technologies expected to deliver real impact and growth within the next five years, placing edible insects alongside areas such as precision fermentation and cultivated meat.
This recognition reflects the continued efforts of organisations across the sector, including the important work of the UK Edible Insect Association (UKEIA) in promoting and advocating for insects within a sustainable food system.
The Royal Entomological Society is delighted to be named as a reliable source of information on this topic in Manna Insect’s Annual Global Insect Industry Survey 2025.
“At the Royal Entomological Society, we are pleased to be working collaboratively with partners across research, UKEIA, industry and policy to support the responsible development of this space. This includes contributing to the development of voluntary codes of practice and helping to ensure that emerging activity is underpinned by strong evidence and shared standards.”

Convening discussions remains a key part of our role. Through events such as Insects as Food and Feed, we bring together experts and stakeholders to share knowledge, explore challenges and support informed, cross-sector dialogue.
As momentum builds, we look forward to continuing to support collaboration and provide a trusted, evidence-led voice for the entomology community.
