Call for Papers

New challenges in the management of insecticide resistance

Letter of Intent submission deadline: Tuesday, 30 April 2024
Manuscript submission deadline (for invited authors): Wednesday, 31 July 2024

Despite the efforts to develop alternative vector control measures, insecticides are still crucial to avoid the spread of vector-borne diseases.

However, the overreliance on chemical control strategies has led to the rise and spread of insecticide resistance in insect vectors. The dwindling effectiveness of biocides results in increased concentrations of chemicals released in the field, which can strongly affect human, other animal, and environmental health.

A comprehensive understanding of vector resistance to both, currently widely used insecticides as well as those prequalified recently by the WHO, together with investigation on the underlying molecular mechanisms is essential for the development of tools for the easy and early detection of resistance. Such tools are crucial for the further studying of the evolution and spread of resistance and its impact on vector biology/fitness and competence, as well as for the development and timely application of resistance management interventions that aim at avoiding widespread selection and irreversible resistance.

This special issue aims at favouring the submission of papers contributing to the further comprehension of insecticide resistance in insect vectors, with a particular focus on Diptera, including research on the identification of resistance to new insecticidal compounds / control tools and their possible impact on mosquito biology and disease transmission , the identification of novel mechanisms and markers of resistance and their spread, as well as the evaluation of tools for the phenotypic and genotypic assessment of insecticide resistance. Purely descriptive studies of limited geographical scope will not be considered.

Prospective authors are invited to submit a letter of intent to the editors as soon as possible (deadline 30/04/2024).

The letter should consist of an extended abstract of a maximum of 500 words detailing background, methods, results, and conclusion. Preliminary results of ongoing projects will be considered. These letters will be reviewed as received and authors invited to submit manuscripts if the article is believed to fit the scope of the journal special issue and be of high quality and novelty.

Letters of intent should be submitted to the Guest Editors Marco Pombi (marco.pombi@uniroma1.it) and Verena Pichler (verena.pichler@uniroma1.it), and/or the Commissioning Editor Xinrui Wang (xiwang@wiley.com).

The deadline for full submissions is 31/07/2024

All submissions will be peer-reviewed according to standard review procedures. We welcome original articles and short communications. In addition, a limited number of reviews will be accepted based on originality and relevance.

Topics to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel Insecticide resistance mechanisms in main vector groups: mosquitoes, sand flies and other dipteran vectors.
  • New description of insecticide resistance phenotypes and mechanisms in neglected species,
  • Epidemiological impact of insecticide resistance,
  • Fitness cost of insecticide resistance mechanisms,
  • Procedures and comparison of procedures for the assessment/ investigation of insecticide resistance phenotypes and mechanisms.
