Dear all our valued Members and Fellows,

Thank you for being part of the Royal Entomological Society community. Your support this year has helped us make incredible strides in promoting insect science, funding important research, expanding outreach to young people, and strengthening collaboration across the global entomological community.

As we plan for the year ahead, we want to ensure that we can continue to deliver the programmes, events, publications and learning opportunities that matter so much to our members. To do this sustainably, and to further enhance our support for entomologists worldwide, we will be introducing a small adjustment to membership prices from 1 January 2026.

Here are some Achievements and Highlights of 2025

Members of The RES staff team accepting the MemCom Award for Best Learned Society 2025

Awarded “Best Professional Body or Learned Society” 2025. RES won the Memcom Excellence Awards in the “Best Professional Body or Learned Society” category — a major recognition of the Society’s growth, impact and contribution to the entomological community over recent years.

Strong growth in publishing and journal output. RES’s publishing portfolio has thrived: 2024–2025 saw increased output across its journals, including a new Special Issue in Agricultural and Forest Entomology exploring advances in insect biomonitoring, and a landmark Special Issue in Insect Molecular Biology on RNA interference (RNAi) technologies — highlighting cutting-edge research and sharing important scientific advances.

Expanding public engagement through the permanent Insect Garden. The RES Insect Garden, originally designed for the Chelsea Flower Show 2023, has been relocated to Stratford Cross, East London, becoming a permanent urban space for public education, outreach, and insect-friendly habitat demonstration. This offers ongoing opportunities for the public to learn about insect biodiversity, habitat creation, and conservation in an urban setting.

Interactive, family-friendly Bug Hunt, launched with animated outreach alongside Aardman’s Lloyd of the Flies. As part of the Insect Garden project, RES teamed up with the creators of Lloyd of the Flies (via Aardman Animations) to launch an augmented-reality “Bug Hunt” trail, a creative, engaging way to draw children and families into the world of insects and insect science. This helps build public interest and awareness in entomology among younger generations.

Partnerships supporting sustainable agriculture and insect-friendly farming. This year, RES formed a partnership with BASF via the Rawcliffe Bridge Award for Sustainability, supporting sustainable farming practices that recognise the role of insects in biodiversity, soil health, and sustainable agriculture. This partnership underscores the Society’s commitment to applying insect science to real-world challenges.

Strengthening science-based policy through the RES APPG. This year saw further impact from the Royal Entomological Society’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Invasive Species and Insect Declines. By bringing expert voices directly to policymakers, the APPG helps ensure insects, and the science that protects them, are considered in major national discussions affecting agriculture, climate action and biodiversity recovery.

Celebrating and supporting excellence in science and removing barriers to our community. We recently launched the RES Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Grant, a dedicated fund to support under-represented groups and research subjects in entomology, remove barriers to participation, and highlight the diversity that strengthens our global insect science community. This grant enables individuals and community-led projects to connect more people with insects, science and nature, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage, thrive and be recognised within the field.

Partnerships through Organisational Membership. RES recently announced our first two official Organisational Partnerships with BASF and UKCEH. These partnerships mark a significant milestone for the Society as we strengthen our ability to support insect science, conservation, and sustainable environmental research on a broader, more impactful scale.

Why These Achievements Matter

Together, these achievements reflect a growing and dynamic Society, one that is:

  • Supporting and disseminating top-quality insect science research globally
  • Engaging public audiences, young people, and communities in understanding and valuing insects
  • Building partnerships that link science, agriculture, sustainability and conservation
  • Strengthening education, outreach and future capacity for entomology
  • Advocating for the importance of insect science in policymaking, biodiversity and ecosystem health

Whether you’re a scientist, student, educator, policy-maker or enthusiast, the impact of these successes benefits the whole entomological community and the planet as a whole.

“These are incredible milestones that you have helped make possible through your membership with the Royal Entomological Society. We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

Thank you for being part of our mission to champion insect science and the global entomology community.”

– Simon Ward, RES CEO

Membership Price Update

We know that price changes are never welcome, but this update is essential to:

  • Grow equitable access to entomology, including expanded reduced-rate membership for students and those in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Continue supporting researchers and early-career entomologists through grants, travel bursaries and networking opportunities via events.
  • Deliver high-quality, impactful insect science through our journals, events and public engagement.
  • Champion the protection of insects and their habitats, amplifying science in policy and conservation.
  • Invest in inclusive activities and resources that strengthen the future of the discipline.

Your membership directly enables this important work and ensures that everyone, everywhere, can engage with and benefit from entomology. We have exciting plans for the new year, including new books, merchandise, a new Diptera themed handbook, and even a new journal. We also plan to share updates on our new headquarters situated in central London – watch this space!

If you have questions about the upcoming changes, your membership category or organisational partnerships, please contact our Membership Manager, Rebecca Brueton at info@royensoc.co.uk.

Thank you once again for your continued commitment to the study of insects. We’re excited for what we will accomplish together in the year ahead – advancing knowledge, inspiring new generations, and supporting a thriving global community of insect scientists.

With appreciation,
The Royal Entomological Society
