Darwin Biological is proud to announce the release of The Practical Biologist, a brand-new educational booklet designed specifically for UK secondary schools. Developed in collaboration with world-renowned expert partner organisations, this resource aims to inspire the next generation with hands-on, practical biological knowledge.
Copies of The Practical Biologist are arriving in 4500 schools across the UK this week, as well as being freely available to view online at darwinbiological.co.uk. The booklet offers students and educators a fresh, engaging approach to practical biology through showcasing leading institutions who are shaping the future of the sector and highlighting the free resources these passionate organisations offer.
Contributors include: RMS (Royal Microscopical Society), CLEAPSS, Linnean Society of London, Royal Entomological Society, Culture Collection of Algae & Protozoa, MiSAC, Science & Plants for Schools, Darwin Biological, Field Studies Council, ASE & Mammal Society.
“We believe that biology should be exciting, accessible, and sustainable. By working with great British partners, we can utilise their expertise and showcase the amazing free resources they have to offer schools.”
– Meg Bilson, founder of Darwin Biological
From fascinating experiments using slime mould, to troubleshooting the classic pondweed photosynthesis practical, the booklet has something for all stages of secondary education and is designed to be accessible no matter the expertise or budget. It reflects Darwin Biological’s commitment to excellence in science education and its mission to foster curiosity and critical thinking in classrooms nationwide.
The Royal Entomological Society is delighted to have contributed to this new initiative by providing an activity on pitfall trapping for soil invertebrates. Our practical introduces students to the rich diversity of insects and other small creatures living in the soil, helping them develop core scientific skills while discovering the importance of invertebrates in ecosystems.
We are proud to support innovative educational tools that inspire curiosity, build confidence in outdoor learning, and make entomology accessible to young people.
The Practical Biologist is freely available online, offering teachers a valuable new resource to enrich their lessons and encourage students to explore the natural world. To explore the booklet online, visit www.darwinbiological.co.uk or email hello@darwinbiological.co.uk to request a printed copy.
