About the journal 

Agricultural and Forest Entomology is a Royal Entomological Society international journal with an audience of researchers, policymakers and professionals. 

Our journal covers a wide range of topics, including research on insect pests, pollinators, and natural enemies in managed forests and agroecosystems. We welcome papers on biology, behaviour, population dynamics, impact, and management of insects in various production systems. Submissions on techniques for pest management, studies on insect communities, and the influence of management practices are encouraged. 

About you 

We are seeking an active researcher in the field to join our team as Editor-in-Chief. The role works closely with our co-EiCs and editorial board to make decisions on submitted manuscripts and drive journal strategy. This is a voluntary position, but some financial support is available to attend Royal Entomological Society strategy meetings, the RES’s annual ‘Ento’ conference, and to act as an advocate for the journal at international conferences. We also cover the cost of RES Membership or Fellowship for the duration of the EiC’s term. We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher who is committed to building the profile of the journal and handling manuscripts with integrity. 

We are looking for researchers working in any area of the journal’s scope. Training of new EiCs will be provided as part of their induction to the role, including with current and continuing members of the EiC team.  

Essential criteria: 

  • Have an active publication record within the scope of the journal. 
  • Have experience of reviewing work in the field. 
  • Provide evidence of leadership skills (e.g., team working, strategic roles) and an ability to collaborate within the Editorial team to actively develop and promote the journal. 
  • Be committed to the Royal Entomological Society vision and mission, and actively engage with it. 
  • Show awareness of current developments in scientific publishing (e.g., open access, open data) and knowledge about integrity challenges affecting scientific publications. 
  • Show a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity in scientific publishing. 

Desirable criteria: 

  • Have previous editorial experience (as Editor, Associate Editor or Subject Editor) for one or more relevant journals. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Assess submissions for topic suitability and scientific quality, and make final decisions on publication based on advice of the Associate Editor and editorial board /reviewers. 
  • Identify emerging topics and work with the Journal team to commission high-quality content. 
  • Promote the journal at key meetings and conferences, and support its promotion on social media. 
  • Work with the editorial team to drive the strategic direction of the journal. 
  • Potentially represent the journal on the Society’s Publications Committee or other Society Working Groups.
