The RES Goodman Fund

Up to £3,000 to Advance Public Understanding of Insect Science

What we fund

Goodman Fund Criteria

These grants aim to fund projects that support at least one of the following:

  • the education of the public in the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of all aspects of insect physiology and behaviour, thereby promoting the control and conservation of insect species
  • research into aspects of insect physiology and behaviour through online, digital or printed materials.

  • exhibitions, meetings, lectures, classes, seminars and courses that widen the understanding of insect physiology and behaviour.

Who Can Apply

  • Applicants must be a RES Fellow, Member or Student Member – visit our Membership Pages to find the level of membership that best suits you. (Associate Members are not eligible).
  • Goodman Fund grants are awarded to individuals, not organisations.
  • Applications are open worldwide.

Key Dates

There are three application periods in 2026:

  • First round: 2 March – 31 March
  • Second round: 1 April – 19 June
  • Third round: 20 June – 2 October

Applicants will be notified within two months of the closing date.

Assessment Criteria

Strong applications will demonstrate that the project:

  • Clearly meets the objectives of the Goodman Fund (listed above)
  • Clearly describes how the project relates to insect behaviour and/or physiology and/or other entomological disciplines.
  • Has well-defined aims, impacts and outcomes and detail on how they will be measures, alongside a detailed description of project including context /rationale, aims and methods.
  • Has clear target audience(s) and plans for engaging them.
  • Has strong public engagement and educational value
  • Has considered scope for future continuation.
  • Has taken steps to minimise barriers to participation

Projects must not be primary research studies and must focus on communication, education, or outreach.

Applications must include a detailed breakdown of how funds will be used.

Funding Conditions

  • Maximum grant: £3,000
  • Reasonable travel costs may be supported
  • Essential equipment or resource creation may be funded
  • Living and subsistence costs may be considered where essential to the project

Funding is not available for:

  • Overheads
  • Salary supplementation for applicants or collaborators
  • Total equipment costs over £1,000

All costs must be clearly justified in the application. RES contribution must be acknowledged in any publication or publicity that may arise from the project and we should be notified about any publication or publicity that arises.

Repeat Applications and Other Restrictions

  • Successful applicants may not reapply for a Goodman Fund Grant for 24 months[RB1] 
  • Projects previously rejected will be rejected again without review
  • Failure to submit a satisfactory report within three months will lead to disqualification from future RES grants
  • Projects taking place outside the applicant’s country must demonstrate collaboration with relevant local organisations, agencies, NGOs, or communities.

The following will NOT be considered:

  • Projects forming part of a wider funded research programme
  • Primary research projects
  • Expedition participation (unless part of a standalone qualifying project)
  • Conference attendance, unless part of a wider public-facing event. (Please see the Conference Participation Grant if you are seeking funding for this.)

Applicants must obtain all relevant permissions and permits.

  • Please fill out the Goodman Fund Application Form.
  • After application, you will be invited to take part in our EDI survey (optional)
  • You can expect a decision within two months

Reporting Requirements

Choice of:

  • Antenna magazine or RES website article (~250 words plus images)
  • Short video for RES youtube channel
  • INSTAR magazine article (for young people)
  • Other similar output
