Michael Samways is an internationally renowned entomologist, conservation biologist and leading advocate for insect biodiversity conservation. A Professor at Stellenbosch University, his pioneering research has shaped global understanding of insect conservation, ecological networks and biodiversity management across agricultural and natural landscapes.

Over a distinguished career spanning decades, Professor Samways has authored more than 250 scientific publications and several influential books, including Conservation of Dragonflies, Insect Conservation Biology and Insect Diversity Conservation, both regarded as landmark contributions to the field. His work has focused on insect conservation ethics, restoration ecology, dragonfly conservation, invasive species management and the development of ecological indicators for monitoring environmental health.

Professor Samways is a longstanding Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society since the 1970’s and has long contributed to international entomology through research, publishing and conservation leadership. His work aligns closely with the Society’s mission to advance insect science and promote the understanding and protection of insect biodiversity worldwide. He was awarded the RES Insect Conservation Award in 2019, contributed to RES journals, the RES quarterly Antenna magazine, and contributed as a keynote speaker at several RES events, including Ento24 and Aquatic Insects Special Interest Group in 2026.

Widely recognised as one of the leading voices in invertebrate conservation, he has also played key roles within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), contributing to global strategies for biodiversity protection and invertebrate conservation. His research continues to inspire scientists, conservationists and policymakers working to safeguard ecosystems in a rapidly changing world.
