The Royal Entomological Society is delighted to announce the launch of a new journal to join the seven journals already published by the society.
Approaches in Entomology (AIE) will publish innovative and exciting advances to methods and techniques across the broad remit of entomology, encompassing all stages and subdisciplines of entomological research, from lab and field to computation, theory and interpretation, including the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of insect science. AIE will also be the first fully open access journal published by the Society.
Approaches in Entomology was the brainchild of Editor-in-Chief, Jordan Cuff, and Emilie Aimé, Director of Publications at the Society, and will fill a gap in the RES portfolio of journals, by covering methods, philosophies and ethics in insect science. Alongside Jordan, Approaches in Entomology will be led by a multidisciplinary team of exceptional insect scientists from across the broad remit of the journal: Meghan Barratt, Mike Bonsall, and Beulah Garner.
The journal will welcome contributions presenting novel methods and techniques, creative adaptations of existing approaches from other disciplines to entomology, and philosophical perspectives that challenge or refine how we conduct and interpret entomological research.
Topics of interest will include, amongst other things;
- innovations in laboratory, field, theoretical or computational techniques;
- new open-source equipment or tools;
- novel software or analytical workflows;
- innovative approaches to reproducibility and data sharing;
- and insightful examinations of experimental design, interpretation and welfare.
The aim is to attract articles from all entomological contexts, including agriculture, conservation, ecology, medically relevant insects, molecular biology, physiology, systematics, taxonomy, veterinary insects, insect welfare and beyond.
“Insect science is a dynamic and continually evolving field, driven equally by the methods we use and the philosophies that guide our investigations. Together, methods and philosophies form the foundations from which progress across entomology ultimately arises. Sharing and critically reflecting on new and improved approaches is essential for innovation in entomology to extend beyond individual laboratories and subdisciplines.
Approaches in Entomology presents an exciting new venture for the Royal Entomological Society, but also a new home for innovative advances to methods and philosophies across insect science.”
– Jordan Cuff FRES, Editor in Chief
“The RES is excited to support the addition of this new journal to its portfolio of high-quality research journals. Approaches in Entomology will satisfy a key need the community, a dedicated home for papers addressing methods and techniques in entomological research.
The RES journals pride themselves on providing only the highest quality research articles and has assembled a hugely resected editorial team to continue that tradition in this latest venture. Publishing under an open access model with appropriate support for authors from all over world will ensure it has the greatest impact possible.”
– David Ross, Director of Publishing
With the launch of Approaches in Entomology, the RES will be providing a home for publishing across all walks of entomology.
