The Royal Entomological Society (RES) is seeking four Members or Fellows to guide the scientific direction of Ento27, our flagship annual conference celebrating all aspects of entomological research. Next year’s event is taking place at Lancaster University from 7–9 September, and we are particularly keen to hear from entomologists in the Northwest to help reflect the local landscape of insect science.
Ento is growing in size year on year, with around 300+ delegates, three plenaries, over 70 talks, around 60 posters and 15 exhibitors .
Convenors will work collaboratively to shape the academic content and structure of the conference, ensuring a vibrant, inclusive and scientifically engaging programme. This is a key leadership opportunity to influence the scientific tone and reach of Ento27 and to represent the breadth and diversity of the entomological community. The RES will cover Ento registration, travel and accommodation costs for all convenors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Scientific direction: help define the key scientific themes for Ento27.
- Plenary speakers: identify and invite plenary speakers (usually 3–4) who reflect the diversity and excellence of the field, both within the UK and internationally.
- Session development: select session topics and symposia in line with the conference themes.
- Abstract selection: review and select talks, posters and potential workshops, following the call for abstracts.
- Programme planning: work with the RES team on the programming, including supporting ideas for workshops and fringe events.
- Collaboration: attend monthly planning meetings (virtual) with the RES team and fellow convenors.
- Summer programming day: participate in an in-person programming meeting (summer 2027) following the close of abstract submissions, to develop and finalise the programme.
- Chairing: chair a session at Ento and agree/suggest other suitable session chairs.
The RES team will handle event logistics, communication and administration, so convenors can focus on science and content.
