Conservation Project Officer

Sophie is a Conservation Project Officer undertaking scientific insect research which helps advise RES conservation work. Sophie studied for an MSci in Conservation Biology and Ecology at the University of Exeter, with her thesis focusing on Meadow Brown butterflies. For her PhD at Lancaster University, she studied Mountain Ringlet, Scotch Argus and Northern Brown Argus butterflies to examine behavioural responses of cold adapted butterfly species to temperature, to better understand how they may be affected by climate change.

With the Conservation Science Project Team, she contributes to several science-based projects, including the Large Blue butterfly Reintroduction Project. Some of the key areas of research include measuring the impact of extreme weather events on insect populations and identifying practical mitigation responses to climate change.

Sophie particularly enjoys fieldwork and translating ecological research into effective conservation management decisions.
