Talk title: Nature-friendly farming and insect recovery: What does the evidence tell us?

Speaker

Claire Carvell is an internationally renowned expert on pollinator ecology with twenty five years’ research and project leadership experience in the Biodiversity and Land Use Science Area at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. Her research uses a combination of field observations, experiments, molecular genetics, analyses of long-term datasets, community science and modelling approaches, interacting with a range of stakeholders and collaborators in different disciplines to improve environmental policy and practice.

Claire completed her PhD on bumblebees and their responses to agri-environment scheme management in 2006, while based at the CEH Monks Wood research station in Cambridgeshire. Since moving to UKCEH Wallingford, she has led the design and establishment of the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, the first of its kind including structured national monitoring surveys across the full range of flower-visiting insect groups, now in its tenth year. She is also programme manager for AgZero+, an ambitious five-year National Capability research programme supporting the UK’s transition towards domestic food production that is sustainable, carbon-neutral and has a positive effect on nature, and more recently has begun leading the monitoring of the new Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier scheme across England.

Claire is an Advisory Steering Group member for Defra’s National Pollinator Strategy, and has been scientific advisor for the UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) and recent expert on the EU PoMS expert committee and the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee oral evidence session on insect declines. She is a member of the Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Society (BWARS) and Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (RES). Claire is also passionate about insect conservation close to home and recently co-led a project bringing together wildlife, art and citizen science within her local community and surrounding landscapes.

To ensure your spot at the event, we strongly recommend signing up in advance, as spaces are limited and tend to fill quickly. Early registration guarantees your place and helps us plan more effectively for everyone attending. 

The lecture will start at 16:30, there will be tea and coffee available from 16:00. There will be an RES stand and rare books on display, so do arrive early to meet key members of the RES team.

If you are unable to attend in person, the talk will be recorded and shared after the event.
