Advancing Insect Science for Everyone

19–25 October 2026.

As we celebrate Open Access Week 2026, we’re taking the opportunity to showcase how Royal Entomological Society journals help share insect science with the world.

Open Access publishing allows research to be read, shared and built upon without barriers, helping scientists, students, conservationists, policymakers and insect enthusiasts access the latest discoveries in entomology.

Open access is transforming how research is shared, helping knowledge reach wider audiences and enabling greater collaboration across the global scientific community. The Royal Entomological Society remains committed to supporting accessible, rigorous and impactful publishing as part of our Open Research Roadmap.

Our First Fully OA Journal – Introducing Approaches in Entomology

This year marks an exciting milestone for the Society with the launch of Approaches in Entomology: Methods, Philosophies & Ethics. All of our journals have the option to publish Open Access, but Approaches in Entomology is the first fully open access journal published by the Royal Entomological Society.

The journal provides a dedicated home for innovative methods, new technologies, analytical approaches, open-source tools, philosophical perspectives and ethical discussions that advance insect science across all areas of entomology. From field techniques and laboratory innovations to computational methods and scientific best practice, Approaches in Entomology is designed to support the future of insect research.

The journal is also embraces other Open Science initiatives. Manuscripts are reviewed under a double-blind peer review process, meaning that reviewers are not given the names of the authors, and authors do not know the names of the reviewers, unless they choose to identify themselves. This system helps to address perceived biases during peer review and has been well received by the community. The journal also offers with transparent peer review post-publication Reviewer and editor comments to the authors, as well as authors’ point-by-point responses are published alongside the published article. Reviewers can also opt-in to having their names included with their reviews, giving credit to their invaluable work in the publishing ecosystem. Like all other RES journals, Approaches in Entomology also mandates data archiving and asks all authors to provide data with the first revision of the article. These open science initiatives, along with the skill and diligence of our global, expert editorial board, help ensure a high-quality review process, and excellent published articles, along with useful, reusable data available to anyone.

We are excited to see the journal begin its journey as a new platform for innovation, collaboration and discovery – find out more about the development of the journal here and, if you are a member, log in to discover your APC discount code for Approaches in Entomology.

Why Society Journals Matter

When you publish, review or read articles in an RES journal, you’re doing more than supporting scientific communication.

Income generated through our publishing activities helps the Society invest in grants, awards, outreach programmes, education initiatives, conferences, student support and public engagement activities that strengthen the future of entomology. By supporting society publishing, you’re helping to enrich the world with insect science.

Explore Our Eight Journals
