Our grants, awards and bursaries programme exist to support and recognise activities which further the Society’s aims and aim to empower the entomological community to improve and communicate insect science. Over £75,000 will be awarded in 2024.
Many of our grants are only available to RES members (excluding Associate Members). Everyone is welcome and anyone can join the Society, you can visit our Membership Pages to find the level of membership that best suits you.
Note: Applicants can only submit one grant application at a time, across all RES grants.
If you are successfully awarded one of our awards or grants, you will not be eligible to receive the same award or grant again for 24 months. Any applications submitted within this period will not be considered. You are, however, welcome to apply for our other awards and grants during this time.

Grants and Funding
Grants to support research projects in entomology that advance the science. Projects can be awarded up to £3,000.
Eligibility: Fellows and Members (except Associate Members)

Grants to advance public understanding and appreciation of insect science. Originally established with the L. J. Goodman Insect Physiology Research Trust in recognition of insect physiologist Lesley J Goodman. Grants up to £3000 can be awarded.

Grants for projects to improve equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within insect science. Up to £3000 to widen participation in entomology through information campaigns, awareness events and research and definition projects.

Funds access to entomology equipment for young people aged 14-18. The Fund, was established in honour of Douglas Boyes (1996-2021). Awards up to £300.
Eligibility: Anyone aged 14 to 18 or a group or class of that age group with an interest in insects

Grants awarded up to £500 to support the communication and public engagement activities of students in entomology.
Eligibility: Undergraduate or Postgraduate Student Members
OPEN – 2025 Application Period: 5 October 2025 – 5 December 2025
Grants awarded up to £500 to assist student participation at a conference to present a talk, a poster or to organise a session/workshop.

Bursaries fund up to £20,000 to support postgraduate students in entomology
Eligibility: UK & ROI HE institutions offering postgraduate study in entomology

Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) and Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP)
Eligibility: Considered case by case in collaboration with HE institutions

Awards and Recognition
For outstanding services to the science of entomology. The award will be made to a researcher who has contributed outstanding work to the science and who best reflects Sir Vincent Wigglesworth’s standards of personal involvement in every aspect of his/her research.
Eligibility for nomination: Any researcher or practitioner in the sector
Cycle: every 4 years, last winner declared in 2024. Nominations to be submitted to membership@royensoc.co.uk up to 18 months before the I.C.E. Winner will be notified no less that 12 months before the I.C.E.
Lifetime achievement in insect science or outstanding services to the Royal Entomological Society and wider entomological community.
Eligibility for nomination: Any researcher or practitioner in the sector.
CLOSED – 2025 Nomination Deadline: 30 May 2025
For exceptional early career contribution to insect science.
Eligibility for nomination: Any researcher or practitioner in the sector within ten years of completing their undergraduate degree or with less than ten years working in insect science in any capacity, with or without a degree
OPEN – 2025 Application Deadline: 31 December 2025.
This award is under review to be relaunched later in 2025.
For the best comprehensive taxonomic work on a group of insects, or, related arthropods (including terrestrial and freshwater hexapods, myriapods, arachnids and their relatives).

For an outstanding contribution to insect conservation; on the basis of ‘lifetime achievement’, or ‘considerable and exemplary contribution’ to a significant project.

For outstanding application and practice of entomology, demonstrating the application of insect science that improves people’s lives in industry, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, medicine and veterinary science.

For the best paper published by an Early Career Researcher in each of the seven RES journals.
Eligibility for nomination: Any paper published in a RES journal by an Early Career Researcher

For postgraduates who have been awarded a PhD or DPhil, whose work is considered by their supervisor to be outstanding.
Eligibility for nomination: Any researcher awarded a PhD or DPhil in the last two years

Recognises educators working with school-age learners who inspire curiosity, nurture an interest in the natural world, and introduce children and young people to the vital role insects play in nature and our lives.
Eligibility for nomination: Open to teachers, home educators, education officers who work with children or young people anywhere in the world (5-18)

Recognises exceptional teachers and lecturers at universities, colleges, and research institutions worldwide who bring innovation and research insight to preparing the next generation of insect scientists
Eligibility for nomination: Open to educators at universities, research institutions, and adult/lifelong learning institutions worldwide.
